US Navy
US Navy is the branch of the United States armed
forces responsible for naval operations. US Navy has its
origins in the Continental Navy. The Department of Navy started functioning
from April 30, 1798 and the US Navy became a part of the Department of Defense
in 1947.
US Navy plays an important role in the defense of the country as United States
has sea on almost all the sides. The most important military functions of US
Navy are-
1. Controlling the seas,
2. Using the control to project American power abroad,
3. Transporting troops, supplies and equipment by sea(this is called sealift)
4. Operating naval craft armed with nuclear weapons to build up the nuclear
power of the country.
The US Navy includes a fleet of aircraft carriers, surface warships, ballistic
missile submarines, amphibious vessels, attack submarines, and land-based aircraft
as a part of the military equipment. The US
Navy consists of more than 300 ships and more than 4,000 operational aircraft.
There are more than half a million men and women on the rolls either as on active
or ready reserve duty.
The Department of the Navy administers the US Navy and the
topmost position is the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV). The four-star admiral
consisting of the senior naval officer and the Chief of the Naval Operations
(CNO) function immediately under the Secretary of the Navy. The Chief of the
Naval Operations and the Secretary of the Navy are responsible for organizing,
recruiting, training and equipping the US Navy. This is to ensure that the Navy
is ever ready for operation under the command of the Unified Combatant Commanders.
The service members of the US Navy acquire greater responsibilities
while learning newer skills. One such qualification is the warfare qualification,
which qualifies the member for warfare in any of the various fields such as
Aviation Warfare, Special Warfare, Surface Warfare, and Submarine Warfare. They
receive many badges and insignia after completing the approved Personal Qualification
Standards (PQS) in the form of exams and tasks necessary for such qualification.
